Selection for Fertility Traits
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction Fertility is a very complex trait, difficult to define, to record and to evaluate all the factors that influence fertility. Fertility is strongly influenced by environmental effects and in part by genetics, the male for fertilization and the female for conception. In general, the fertility trait is hereditary but only to a small degree. There does however exist sufficient genetic variance among bulls to allow for the identification and the avoidance of those animals with low fertility. This paper outlines the complexities of reproduction, fertility traits, genetic evaluations carried out by various countries for fertility, including recent Italian research on fertility and finally, selection options for the farmer to improve herd fertility.

Molecular Markers for Fertility in Farm Animals
A genetic marker is a gene or DNA sequence with known localization on a chromosome. It can be de-scribed as a variation that can be measured or detected by a suitable method, and can be used subsequently to detect the presence of a specific genotype. Such variations occurring at chromosomal or DNA level can serve as genetic markers. The progress in development of molecular markers suggests thei...
متن کاملMultiple-trait multiple country genetic evaluation of fertility traits in dairy cattle
Female fertility is one of the most economically important traits for the dairy cattle industry. Because of a few decades of selection mainly for higher milk production, many dairy farms around the world suffer from the consequences of female fertility loss. The aims of this thesis were to study the international genetic evaluation of female fertility traits, to quantify the bias of analyzing m...
متن کاملUsing Male Performance to Improve Genomic Selection for Female Fertility in Brahman Cattle
Genomic selection offers the opportunity to improve female fertility in the Northern Australian beef herd. However, genomic predictions for a number of female fertility traits derived solely from the small number of female fertility records collected thus far are only of modest accuracy. In this study measures of Brahman male reproduction were used jointly with the female records, increasing th...
متن کاملInvited review: selection on net merit to improve lifetime profit.
Genetic selection has made dairy cows more profit-able producers of milk. Genetic evaluations began with 2 traits measured on a few cows but now include many traits measured on millions of cows. Selection indexes from USDA included yield traits beginning in 1971, productive life and somatic cell score beginning in 1994, conformation traits in 2000, and cow fertility and calving ease in 2003. Th...
متن کاملPhenotypic traits as reliable indicators of fertility in male broiler breeders.
Genetic selection procedures applied to improve broiler performance may negatively impact the subsequent reproductive efficiency of breeders, particularly in males. Identification of traits that reliably indicate individual male fertility would facilitate selection for reproduction. We hypothesized that physical traits, such as comb area, relative testicular weight, and testicular weight asymme...
